After <a href="/sonic-the-hedgehog/3005-73/" data-ref-id="3005-73">Sonic the Hedgehog's</a> inital defeat, his allies form a <a href="/resistance/3015-2542/" data-ref-id="3015-2542">Resistance</a> force in an attempt to free Sonic and liberate the world from Dr. Eggman's army. Along the way, they get help from both the alternate-dimension Sonic (dubbed "Classic Sonic") and a mysterious (and <a href="/customizable-characters/3015-155/" data-ref-id="3015-155">customizable</a>) recruit.</p><p>Similar to Sonic Generations, the game features both 2.5D side-scrolling and 3D over-the-shoulder perspectives. Throughout the game, players can play as "Modern" Sonic (who can perform a homing attack and boost using White Wisps), "Classic" Sonic (who can perform the "Drop Dash" ability from <a href="/sonic-mania/3030-54733/" data-ref-id="3030-54733">Sonic Mania</a>), and the customizable recruit (who has a wrist-mounted <a href="/grapple/3055-5/" data-ref-id="3055-5">grappling hook</a> and the "Wispon", a one-handed weapon that uses the color-coded powers of <a href="/wisp/3015-6557/" data-ref-id="3015-6557">Wisps</a>). Additional <a href="/downloadable-content/3015-329/" data-ref-id="3015-329">downloadable content</a> allows players to play through a bonus episode as <a href="/shadow-the-hedgehog/3005-811/" data-ref-id="3005-811">Shadow the Hedgehog</a>.</p><p>Along with <a href="/sonic-mania/3030-54733/" data-ref-id="3030-54733">Sonic Mania</a>, the game was announced in commemoration of the series's 25th anniversary.</p><h2>Character Creator Species</h2><p>The following species have been revealed for Sonic Forces' character creator. Each species comes with their own unique trait:</p><ul><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr"><strong>Wolf</strong> — Automatically draws in rings when near them</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr"><strong>Rabbit</strong> — Has longer invincible time after receiving damage</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr"><strong>Cat</strong> — Keeps one ring after being hit</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr"><strong>Dog</strong> — Restarts with five rings after the player dies</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr"><strong>Bear</strong> — Blows away enemies with a homing attack</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr"><strong>Bird</strong> — Flies high with double jump abilities</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr"><strong>Hedgehog</strong> — Collects rings when getting damaged</p></li></ul>
