It was later released for the <a href="/pc/3045-94/" data-ref-id="3045-94">PC</a> on August 29, 2017.</p><p>Developed as an official collaborative effort between creators previously known for <a href="/sonic-the-hedgehog/3025-383/" data-ref-id="3025-383">Sonic the Hedgehog</a> fanwork (including the enhanced ports of <a href="/sonic-cd/3030-14433/" data-ref-id="3030-14433">Sonic CD</a>, <a href="/sonic-the-hedgehog/3030-2465/" data-ref-id="3030-2465">Sonic the Hedgehog</a>, and <a href="/sonic-the-hedgehog-2/3030-1662/" data-ref-id="3030-1662">Sonic the Hedgehog 2</a>), Sonic Mania is <a href="/deliberately-retro/3015-996/" data-ref-id="3015-996">heavily stylized</a> on the series's original early-'90s <a href="/genesis/3045-6/" data-ref-id="3045-6">Genesis</a>-based platformers. Along with <a href="/sonic-forces/3030-54734/" data-ref-id="3030-54734">Sonic Forces</a>, it was announced in commemoration of the series's 25th anniversary.</p><p>Players control one of three playable heroes (<a href="/sonic-the-hedgehog/3005-73/" data-ref-id="3005-73">Sonic</a>, <a href="/tails/3005-45/" data-ref-id="3005-45">Tails</a>, or <a href="/knuckles/3005-204/" data-ref-id="3005-204">Knuckles</a>), each with their own unique abilities, as they navigate their way through the hostile robotic forces of <a href="/dr-robotnik/3005-293/" data-ref-id="3005-293">Dr. Eggman</a>, who is harnessing the power of a mysterious gemstone. Along with remastered versions of classic levels from the series, the game features a variety of new locales (each with their own unique obstacles and puzzles).</p><p>The game later received a paid "Encore" DLC on July 17, 2018, adding two new characters (<a href="/mighty-the-armadillo/3005-3544/" data-ref-id="3005-3544">Mighty the Armadillo</a> and <a href="/ray-the-flying-squirrel/3005-3857/" data-ref-id="3005-3857">Ray the Flying Squirrel</a>, each with their own unique abilities), an alternate Story Mode (known as "Encore Mode", featuring an expanded "buddy" mechanic), and an expanded Competition Mode (with four-player split-screen support).
